Asigra named SearchStorage’s Backup & Disaster Recovery product of the year

Backup Technology would like to extend it’s congratulations to Asigra after they were named Search Storage’s Backup and Disaster Recovery product of the year 2011.

After being founded in 1986 by the current CEO, David Farajun, Asigra has continually led the market with unique features, product innovation, support and scalability. The Asigra software has been integral to all of Backup Technology’s Cloud Backup and Virtual Disaster Recovery services since 2005, in which time we have managed to create a global customer base protecting over 8 PetaBytes of data with individual customers exceeding 50 TeraBytes, this simply would not have been possible with any other backup and recovery solution.

Asigra were chosen from hundreds of very impressive product entries, SearchStorage’s judging panel then selected an exceptional group of 48 finalists. In turn the 18 winners were then selected from among the finalists based on innovation, performance, ease of integration, ease of use and manageability, functionality and value.

In recent years Asigra has appeared for the first time in Gartner’s prestigious Magic Quadrant and become increasingly prominent in analyst insights produced by organisations such as CRN, Forrester and the 451 Group. Such recognition validates Asigra’s credentials to all existing partners and customers, whilst also raising it’s profile amongst organisations who are experiencing problems using outdated tape backup solutions or other less scalable or robust Online Backup Services.

One of the key benefits of the Asigra solution which was highlighted by Storage Magazine is that it can be deployed as an on premise Private Cloud solution or as a Fully Managed Public Cloud service depending on a clients Data Protection and Disaster Recovery requirements.. This flexible approach has allowed Backup Technology to create bespoke Asigra Private Clouds for organisations such as The Government Offices, British Red Cross and Cheshire Police whilst Public Clouds are utilised by the likes of Liverpool Football Club, LK Bennett and Suzuki.

One of the judges even commented “There’s nothing like Asigra Cloud Backup in the market for enabling backup and recovery as a service.”

Asigra not only leads on features but also performance. SearchStorage highlighted the many performance enhancements included in version 11 such as “400% improvement in throughput over previous versions, support for 10 Gbps local-area network (LAN) interfaces, and data read/write acceleration with multi-threaded data dedupe, parallel processing for read I/O and data throughput, multiple overlapped I/O and delta differencing.”

“Our goal is to focus organizations on what data protection is really all about, data recovery,” said David Farajun, CEO for Asigra. “We are thrilled that Storage Magazine has recognized the unique advantages our solution brings. Asigra offers a multi-dimensional solution that can reside in and protect physical and virtual environments simultaneously while being device agnostic to protect all instances of data throughout an organization, substantially reducing data protection management requirements.”

2012 promises to be a record year for Asigra and Backup Technology. We hope that this is also the first of many awards this year, after over 26 years of pioneering the market Asigra certainly deserve it.

Backup Technology Launch their Apprenticeship Scheme

Backup Technology is launching a new apprenticeship scheme this autumn at the Selby District Jobs Fair on Wednesday. Open to applicants in Yorkshire, Backup Technology is working to promote the scheme to attract the best talent in the region.

The scheme will be open to young people with little or no work experience or qualifications. The apprentices will have a specific technical focus. Throughout their apprenticeship, they will receive mentoring and coaching from Backup Technology staff and will also be encouraged to train for an external qualification at the same time.

Nigel Adams, MP of Selby and Ainsty, organiser of the Selby District Jobs Fair said:

In these uncertain economic times, apprenticeships in Yorkshire offer a future to young people, many of whom are not in employment, education and training. Apprenticeships not only offer nationally recognised qualifications, but also extremely valuable work experience.

Backup Technology has been expanding significantly and is a strong supporter of the Yorkshire economy. The initiative highlights Backup Technologys long-term commitment to supporting employment and training across the region. Offering jobs-with-training, the scheme is based on the traditional model of apprenticeship.

Backup Technology is continually looking to develop and invest in its future leaders and the Apprenticeship Scheme is a great opportunity to engage with a new pool of talent. We frequently recruit local graduates and promising young talent, but we also understand that a university degree isnt for everyone. The scheme is a fantastic opportunity for those keen to get straight into work with a vibrant and forward thinking company, whilst also working for a recognised qualification said one of the company founders, Simon Chappell.

The London Riots: Being Prepared for the Unpredictable

The London Riot clean up is underway. Many businesses however will have experienced detrimental affects to their IT infrastructures.

It is essential that your business is prepared for the unpredictable. During turbulent times it is vital to have a reliable Data Backup and Recovery protocol in place.

Here are some criteria that Backup Technology have put together as a checklist to help businesses ensure their data is protected.

> Automated data backup solution which can be operated remotely:

It is essential that data can still be backed up in an automated and remote fashion when staff are unable to access an office building.

> Utilise an experienced Managed Service Provider with 24/7 availability:

When a Disaster Recovery (DR) procedure needs to be invoked it is essential that a dedicated team can be contacted immediately to begin the recovery process.

> Have a DR plan in place which meets your organisations critical Recovery Time Objectives:

It is essential that your DR plan is regularly tested to ensure recovery times are in place and that staff are familiar with the procedure.

> Server Recovery into standby Virtual Environment:

Servers must be recoverable into a virtual environment with secure access ensured to all global users.

> Have an established DR site for staff to work from in the event of the primary site being down:

Organisations should have a secondary site which users can work from in the event of their primary site being unavailable.

BTL Launches V2.0 of Free Online Backup for WordPress Plugin

Backup Technology, world leaders in fully managed online backup and disaster recovery services, have released version 2.0 of their free Online Backup for WordPress Plugin. The plugin was originally created when there were no automated online backup services for WordPress with the aim of increasing data security for businesses and bloggers. The plugin has been updated based on user feedback and comments and it is now much more flexible, comprehensive and user friendly and offers an increased free storage quota from 50MB to 100MB.

Wordpress is used by over 14% of the worlds top websites, yet we found that companies were not backing up their websites effectively. said Ritchie Fiddes, Executive Vice President Sales & Marketing of Backup Technology.

Building on the previous version which backed up settings, pages, posts and comments, users can now also back up media, attachments, themes and plugins. It works by initially conducting a full backup of the site and thereafter periodically searching and updating any changed files. Furthermore, the user interface has been simplified and it is now possible to track a sites full backup history. As before, all backups are fully compressed and encrypted and multiple WordPress sites can now be backed up to a single backup account.

The growing concern amongst internet users over online security has meant that this is certainly a much needed free service. With more than 21,000 downloads of version 1, we believe that the new features and increased storage will be even more popular said Fiddes.

Blogging is a big business with Technorati logging 133 billion blogs since 2002. However, the majority of sites are left unprotected because the sites are only as safe as their web host. 86% of todays active bloggers have been blogging for over a year and for all the time and financial investment, only a small percentage of these blogs are actually backed up.

The Internet Group Partners With Leading Online Backup Provider

IT Managed Services Provider (MSP), The Internet Group, is delighted to announce that it has partnered with the award winning Online Backup provider, Backup Technology. This partnership will allow The Internet Group to offer the most advanced Online Backup technology available.

Whilst traditional Online Backup is a fantastic accompaniment to traditional backups such as tape and local Network Attached Storage (NAS), it has never been perceived by the SME market as a core backup strategy. Even with modern internet connections, uploading all of your company data to an Online Backup provider and keeping this data up to date with regular backups would be next to impossible. In contrast, the Online Backup feature provided by Backup Technology is a true tape replacement and is capable of offering improved functionality, faster backups and the ability to run much more frequent off site backups for critical data. As well as this, research carried out by The Internet Group confirms that many SME customers are looking for ways to automate daily tape changes each night and see this technology as real benefit to their businesses as it now means they do not have to be involved with the backup process.

The Backup Technology product also adds extra functionality such as the ability to backup mobile workforce laptops without waiting for them to visit the office, offering constant data protection.

Adam Maurice, Managing Director of The Internet Group comments: We looked at other vendors who are also powered by similar technology but Backup Technology clearly demonstrated throughout the vendor selection process that they were the clear market leader in this field. Our clients will be able to benefit from this technology in the coming weeks.

Backup Technologys core business has been built around its Online Backup service, and they currently protect in excess of 5 Petabytes of customer data in their UK and US data centres. Backup Technologys services are powered by Asigra; the worlds leading software for Online Data backup and Disaster Recovery. Asigras agentless architecture makes it faster and easier to deploy than traditional agent based solutions in both physical and virtual environments. Backup Technologys expertise in deploying Asigra services allows them to protect customers with less than 100 Gigabytes of data to over 100 Terabytes, including the likes of The British Red Cross, Liverpool Football Club and The Government Offices.

Maurice continues: We are proud to have Backup Technology as part of our increasing group of partners and look forward to bringing their technology to our client base.

Ritchie Fiddes, Executive Vice President of Sales at Backup Technology comments: We are delighted to announce our partnership with The Internet Group. They have demonstrated a great understanding of the technical and commercial aspects of successfully delivering our services to their customer base. We look forward to working closely with them over the coming years.
