The Internet Group Partners With Leading Online Backup Provider

IT Managed Services Provider (MSP), The Internet Group, is delighted to announce that it has partnered with the award winning Online Backup provider, Backup Technology. This partnership will allow The Internet Group to offer the most advanced Online Backup technology available.

Whilst traditional Online Backup is a fantastic accompaniment to traditional backups such as tape and local Network Attached Storage (NAS), it has never been perceived by the SME market as a core backup strategy. Even with modern internet connections, uploading all of your company data to an Online Backup provider and keeping this data up to date with regular backups would be next to impossible. In contrast, the Online Backup feature provided by Backup Technology is a true “tape replacement” and is capable of offering improved functionality, faster backups and the ability to run much more frequent off site backups for critical data. As well as this, research carried out by The Internet Group confirms that many SME customers are looking for ways to automate daily tape changes each night and see this technology as real benefit to their businesses as it now means they do not have to be involved with the backup process.

The Backup Technology product also adds extra functionality such as the ability to backup mobile workforce laptops without waiting for them to visit the office, offering constant data protection.

Adam Maurice, Managing Director of The Internet Group comments: “We looked at other vendors who are also powered by similar technology but Backup Technology clearly demonstrated throughout the vendor selection process that they were the clear market leader in this field. Our clients will be able to benefit from this technology in the coming weeks.”

Backup Technology’s core business has been built around its Online Backup service, and they currently protect in excess of 5 Petabytes of customer data in their UK and US data centres. Backup Technology’s services are powered by Asigra; the world’s leading software for Online Data backup and Disaster Recovery. Asigra’s agentless architecture makes it faster and easier to deploy than traditional agent based solutions in both physical and virtual environments. Backup Technology’s expertise in deploying Asigra services allows them to protect customers with less than 100 Gigabytes of data to over 100 Terabytes, including the likes of The British Red Cross, Liverpool Football Club and The Government Offices.

Maurice continues: “We are proud to have Backup Technology as part of our increasing group of partners and look forward to bringing their technology to our client base.”

Ritchie Fiddes, Executive Vice President of Sales at Backup Technology comments: “We are delighted to announce our partnership with The Internet Group. They have demonstrated a great understanding of the technical and commercial aspects of successfully delivering our services to their customer base. We look forward to working closely with them over the coming years.”

Gartner Magic Quadrant for Disk Based Enterprise Backup and Recovery

For the first time, the Gartner Magic Quadrant on Enterprise Backup and Recovery features Cloud Backup vendors alongside traditional tape based offerings.
Cloud Backup vendors were also presented with further good news, when Gartner anticipated that at least 30% of organizations will have changed backup vendors due to frustration over cost, complexity and/or capability and by 2014, 80% of the market will choose advanced, disk-based appliances and backup software-only solutions.

Top ranking of all the Cloud Backup vendors is Asigra.

Asigra is a 25-year-old, privately held company focused exclusively on backup, recovery and archiving.

The company has been providing multi-tenant backup and recovery solutions designed for managed service providers (MSPs) since its inception, and has amassed a very large number of partners that offer it as their own, relabeled software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution. Asigra claims that over 250,000 sites are protected world wide. Initially designed for backup over a standard telephone line, the product has a long history of incorporating data reduction technology. As such, Asigra was one of the first backup solutions to deliver block-level incremental processing whereby only new and changed blocks of data need be transmitted.

The Asigra Cloud Backup software is based on an agent less architecture, with support for remote and branch offices, desktops, virtual environments and now laptops.

Asigra is quick to respond to market trends — notable is its support for CDP, virtual environments and Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 certification.

Asigra started supporting virtual environments almost six years ago. At that time, there were no backup APIs available from server virtualization vendors, so Asigra used the native APIs from VMware and Xen to provide support for VMs. Today, Asigra supports VMware through the vStorage APIs (VADP), as well as through native APIs. Asigra states that the native API method allows for greater granularity, to the file/message level.

As Asigra’s largest global partner with over 5 Petabytes of data under management, Backup Technology are delighted that Asigra have been placed above other managed backup solutions on Gartner’s Magic Quadrant. The results show Asigra’s abilities to enable partners such as Backup Technology to deliver fully managed backup solutions to household name business and enterprise customers.

Backup Technology currently have several individual customers who protect over 50 Terabytes of De Duplicated data using Asigra. Having worked with Asigra for over 6 years, we are confident that it is the only solution in the market that scales to enable us to protect individual customers of this size. What’s most impressive is that it does it without using any agents, and supports all of the major operating systems and database formats.

Retention Policies are expensive – Not with Online Backup

Mathias Thurman recently wrote an article about how having to buy new tapes was costing his company $40,000 each month, because he wasn’t be law allowed to re-use any tapes under 7 years old.  This huge expenditure for new tapes is not uncommon among many companies, and the cost of storing and transporting these tapes often results in companies simply being unable to meet with the law set in place resulting in severe fines and penalties issues by watchdogs and authorities.  However this large figure can be significantly reduced with online data backup from Backup Technology and Asigra.

Asigra has developed automatic retention policies that can be customised by the user, to fit in with their own company data retention policies and also those enforced by the FSA and industry governing bodies.  This allows companies to store all the appropriate data in Backup Technology’s highly secure, geographically separate data centres in Manchester and London, for the total amount of time needed, moving any data older than a certain period into a lower availability vault saving the client even more money in storage costs.  Automatic deletion of all data once it has reached its retention life span also helps to keep data backup storage costs down, and administrative costs and time expenses down.

Asigra can also help I.T. administrators stay on top of more complex retention policies that are being put in place by governing bodies, for example within the FSA regulations there are many different retention policies that apply to different types of data, such as employee records, different sets of accounts.  These variations in retention policies can easily be applied to separate data sets, giving the I.T. administrator yet more control over their protected data.

Utilising reliable disk to disk storage, extraordinary power of the BluArc infrastructure and technological capabilities of the Asigra software, BTL has helped both household names and SME’s alike to save money on the data retention polices they are being forced to put in place.

BlueArc and Asigra Enhance their Strategic Partnership to Increase Online Backup and Disaster Recovery Speeds

In 2007, Backup Technology were the first provider worldwide to combine BlueArc’s Titan network attached storage solution with Asigra’s agentless multi site enterprise backup platform. After completing a lengthy process of testing and due diligence the BlueArc solution has provided Backup Technology with the scalability to grow to protect over 950 terabytes of data whilst providing linea performance so that all customers receive the fastest backup and recovery speeds in the industry.

Since 2007 BlueArc and Asigra’s Strategic Partnership has blossomed which has lead to increased testing and understanding of how to harness both solutions to gain the optimum effeciency, performance and scalbility. As Backup Technology manage and operate some of the largest Asigra vaults in the world, the metrics collected from our implementations are also regularly analised and fed back to BlueArc and Asigra to enable them to compare stats from live systems against the benchmarked lab tests.

Last week saw the release of the Blue-Arc mercury series, designed to bring high performance, enterprise class scalability using its high end, hard ware accelerated storage for mid sized users. The mercury range is designed to cater for the market underneath their already establish Titan 3000 series which has become known for its storage consolidation and storage management. Consisting of two products, the mercury 50 and the mercury 100 the capacity ranges from 1 – 2 PB and NAS throughput of 700 MB/s to 1,100 MB/s.

The actual storage consists of tier 0 solid state drives (SSD), tier 1 Fibre Channel disk, tier 2 SATA, a tier 3 of de-duplicated storage for archive or compliance data from other suppliers. There is also a possible tier 4 of some other supplier’s tape or virtual tape library.

The strategic relationship between Backup Technology, BlueArc and Asigra allows for the implementation of high speed online backup and disaster recovery for all organisations regardless of their data size. With Asigra producing the leading online backup software, their relationship with BlueArc sees the smooth integration and optimised performance with the new mercury range and the existing Titan range.

Asigra Inc have always led from the front on virtual machine protection.

Backup Technology were invited to represent Asigra at VM World in September last year, and we have a large number of our customers who already use our online backup service to protect their virtual environments. In addition, our recently launched Virtual Disaster Recovery solution allows our clients the chance to recover individual servers or their whole infrastructure into our virtual environment, and this can then be presented to allow remote operations to continue.

We already offer the option for VM Ware environments where we can either protect either the base VM file (VMDK) or agentlessly protect the server in the normal way. VM Ware support has been offered since May 2006.

It is very pleasing to be a major partner of such a pro active vendor such as Asigra – who not only react to the moves from other major players but invest the R&D (and most importantly the Q&A) time to deliver robust backup and recovery for the very latest applications and systems.
