A Week’s Work Experience at Backup Technology

A guest post by Fabiana and Sam who spent the week at Backup Technology’s head office on work experience.

Our work experience placement started with Fabiana and I (Sam) being welcomed into the very friendly and relaxed atmosphere that forms the heart of Backup Technology. The head office of Backup Technology has three departments; Sales, Disaster Recovery (DR) and Technical.

Over the course of our work experience, we had a chance to work with all three departments. We started working with DR. DR forms the second product that Backup Technology offer, letting companies have copies of their servers hosted by Backup Technology in a virtual environment, which can then be connected to their own network in the event of server failure. We helped the DR team over the whole of Monday and Tuesday morning to set up several VMs, using VMware. We then installed the correct OS on the VMs that we had created using CloneZilla. The third task we helped with was to produce some of the paperwork which Backup Technology use to know about the companies servers, and therefore make sure that their client knows exactly what they are getting with the service provided.

Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday afternoon were spent with the Technical team, helping to set up 2 new servers. The servers required the pre-installed virtual drives removing, and 2 new ones then adding. We then had to install Linux on one and Windows Server 2008 R2 WEB on the other. Once this was completed, we used SSH (Linux) and RDP (Windows) to connect to the servers remotely and set up the servers ready for use by a customer. After this, we had an introduction into MS SQL Server 2012, after which we started to learn the basics of SQL (neither of us had any experience of SQL beforehand), and this continued through to Thursday lunchtime.

Wednesday morning was spent with Sales, the part of Backup Technology that interacts directly and negotiates contracts with the customers. In Backup Technology, each customer is assigned to a member of the sales team, meaning that each customer is then dealt with in a personal manner. We learnt how Backup Technology have developed their own software, called Portal, which lets the sales team monitor the backups made from their customer’s system and how successful they are, meaning that any issues can be sorted quickly.

Overall, our week placement (this was written on the Thursday) at Backup Technology impressed us with the way that the company worked efficiently as a team, and how friendly they were towards their customers, being completely open with them all the time about any problems that may have arisen.

We both enjoyed the week massively, learning about the company and meeting all the friendly members that make up the Backup Technology team.

Users Rank Asigra as Best Backup Application

Asigra Cloud Backup is an enterprise-level backup and recovery software platform produced and marketed by Asigra Inc. Asigra Cloud Backup software is a product that swings both ways – it can be set up as your own cloud or as backup as a service: the choice is yours. Asigra Cloud Backup supports the backup and recovery of and can be installed on operating systems such as Windows, Linux and Mac OS. The software also supports the backup and restore of virtualization platforms including VMware.

Asigra’s win in the Quality Awards was clearly out of nowhere. It scored an overall score of 6.38 which is one of the highest it has ever got while its fellow competitors, including HP and Symantec, scored an average of high in to the 5s.

Purchasing new backup software is like making a lifetime decision so it is important to choose the perfect system that is right for you and the data centre. Asigra had the highest ratings for each of the seven statements in the sales-force competence category.

The list continues from the product features to the product reliability and the technical support category.  Eventually Asigra got beaten in the Initial Product Quality but Asigra still got the highest ratings in six out of the seven statements showing that this product is a dark horse seeking for its name to be read out in awe. After being asked if ‘you would buy this product again?’ an impressive 93% of its users strongly agreed giving once again a huge amount of success. Asigra really did top off its performance for the Quality Award.

Computers fill our life and our work. They faithfully accumulate our pictures, our company’s books, and the ceaseless emails we get and send. But, unless you back it up, all that data can be gone in a blink of an eye. Backups protect us from viruses, hardware failure, theft, accidental deletion and natural disasters such as floods and fires.

Backup Technology who currently protect over 15 petabytes of data with the Asigra software would like to congratulate the whole of Asigra for this outstanding achievement.

Backup Technology Parent Company iomart Announces 37% rise in Pre Tax Profits

– 28 May 2014 –

Our parent company, iomart Group plc (AIM: IOM), has today announced pre-tax profits of £14.6m for the year ended 31 March 2014.

In its annual results announcement to the London Stock Exchange iomart revealed that adjusted profit before tax had increased by 37% from £10.7m in 2013.

iomart also announced revenue growth of 29% to £55.6m (2013: £43.1m), with revenues from its hosting segment growing by 40% to £44.7m (2013: £32.0m), as well as a 43% increase in adjusted EBITDA to £23.6m (2013: £16.5m).

iomart said the increase in profitability had been driven by both by organic and acquisitive growth. iomart has made 11 acquisitions over the past five years, with Backup Technology its biggest to date. iomart now owns and operates datacentres in eight locations throughout the UK to support the delivery of cloud solutions. Angus MacSween, Chief Executive of iomart, said: “We continue to believe in the long term opportunity for iomart as IT spending moves towards the ‘cloud’, as networks and connectivity expand and mobility increases. Our vision remains to be the best in the UK at the delivery of compute, storage and network in the cloud in a seamless, efficient and scalable way.”

iomart continues to invest in the tools and technologies used to deliver cloud services and has  completed a £multi-million state-of-the-art extension to its datacentre in Maidenhead to meet the computing needs of the growing number of SME and enterprise level customers who are moving to the cloud.

Angus MacSween added: “To date it has mainly been the web-facing elements of infrastructure that have been outsourced to the cloud and the back-office workload continues to be handled ‘on premise.’ Most of this back-office infrastructure is bought in the same way as it was 15 years ago. We believe this will change and we can already see the early adopters starting to move to the cloud. This reinforces the ‘dripping roast’ nature of the market opportunity and as I have been saying for the last five years, it has a long, long way to go. iomart is at the forefront of this transformational shift and I expect the cloud opportunity to continue for many years to come.”
