How can IT managers take advantage of the chaos which has become prevalent through the emergence of tablets and smart phones.
At the ‘Consumerization of IT’ conference Dion Hinchcliffe, Executive Vice President of strategy at Dachis Group stated, “we’re only 20% away from most IT being outside the control of the IT department.”
This is a daunting statistic indeed for any IT department. However as Hinchcliffe later pointed out if you try and stop consumer trends becoming prevalent in the business arena, they will simply go around you.
Tablet technology is not the only thing to be translated from the consumer to business environment. Social networking for instance has also penetrated the business world and has become standard practice within most companies. Facebook is used for employees to communicate as well as for companies to communicate with the outside world.
Many organisations are issuing their people on the ground with iPads, creating mobile efficiency as well as an ability to demonstrate key products at sales meetings.
The release of the iPad 3 demonstrates how the tablet industry is set to keep expanding at the same phenomenal rate.
“It’s astonishing how fast the product has spread through business, education and healthcare,” Charles Wolf, an analyst with Needham & Co speaking to USA today.
With the mobile user trend continuing to grow IT professionals in charge of security must embrace the changing landscape and work constructively to keep roaming data secure.
