PA Consulting recently lost government data containing information of thousands of criminals and prisoners resulting in their contract worth £1.5m being terminated.
The data stored on a conventional storage device, a USB memory stick, had not been encrypted and was stolen after being securely delivered to the firm heightening the concerns about data security.
The memory stick had unencrypted data of thousands of criminals including their names, date of births, release dates of almost 84,000 prisoners and 33,000 records from the police national computer. It also contained identity card numbers and details of people on drug treatment programmes.
If such high security, classified data could be stolen so easily, because it was stored on a USB device, you can be sure that your valuable data is not safe either. All data storage should be encrypted and protected with a password.
The latest technological solution to data storage problems is online storage. Online storage is where you upload all your data to an ‘online vault’ which is then accessible only with your username and password.
Layers over layers of security protect your information from falling into wrong hands or being misused. You can easily opt for an online backup and online data storage service from a reputable online data backup company.
