Virgin Media had a major set-back earlier in the year (2008) when the bank details of almost 3,000 customers on a CD were lost.
The incident that was revealed on 29th May happened because of customer negligence, as claimed by the company, and Virgin Media was doing its best to recover the stolen data.
The incident just heightens the fact that data stored on conventional storage devices like hard drives, CD’s or DVD’s is vulnerable to loss due to theft or equipment damage.
Learning from such incidents, it would not be wise to store your critical data on portable hard drives and other traditional storage media.
One of the best ways to manage and store data is doing it online. Companies have woken up to such data susceptibility and the idea of storing data online, in an online vault is fast gaining popularity.
Data loss happens not only due to theft, but also due to computer malfunctions and other incidents.
These incidents cannot always be avoided, but with online data backup, it is easier to get business back on track as your data remains unaffected.
With the many layers of security provided by online backup, it is nearly impossible to get access to your data without your unique username and password.
