Data loss involving military personnel could cause severe problems

An urgent investigation is being conducted by the Ministry of Defence police into a hard drive that was lost by the Ministry. The lost data is believed to contain important information about those serving the armed forces such as names, dates of birth, license details, passport numbers and addresses. The consequences of the loss of this information could be disastrous to those 100,000 personnel and the Government.

The incident has been criticised by many people who believe that such an incident should never have occurred. Liam Fox, the shadow defence secretary, was quoted as saying that it was highly irresponsible for the Government to handle so much confidential and personal information so recklessly.

This kind of data loss can cause all kinds of problems for the people involved, should that data land in the wrong hands.

One of the best ways to back up that data is through an online data backup. An online or offsite data backup can be very helpful for protecting vital information. Encrypting and backing up important information is important for any organisation whether commercial or government. Online storage and online data backup prevents the use of portable storage devices and hard disks by making them redundant.
