Cloud Computing – Switching to the Cloud can help reduce your company’s Carbon Footprint

Nucleus Research Inc. a leading provider of investigative information technology research has recently published a report stating that Cloud Computing can significantly decrease a company’s power usage. By evaluating the customer base of a leading Cloud based CRM provider, Salesforce.com, Nucleus conclude that cloud computing uses 91% less energy than traditional on site applications.

In depth analysis ran by Nucleus included customers from small to large businesses. By comparing what these customers would need to run their applications on site, in typical server environments, to a typical Salesforce setup, the energy saving results are both surprising and considerable. The report concludes:

“In assessing the energy footprint of on premise computing versus cloud computing, Nucleus found the actual green benefit from a cloud model to be significant. Previous Nucleus reports have shown the financial benefits of the shared cloud model, so it is not unreasonable to assume some green benefit. What is surprising is the magnitude of the green benefit and the effects 91 percent savings in energy consumption can have in reducing CO2 emissions”.

So, in a time when companies are striving to reduce their carbon footprint, as well as reduce their overheads, switching to a Cloud Hosted solution can certainly help businesses achieve this. Companies can switch to hosting companies for their live servers, as well as remove their in house tape backups to a secure, automated Online Cloud Backup Solution.
